Sustainable forest management system of the JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill" (FSC/PEFC)

The management of the mill pays much attention to the problem of
sustainable forest
management and voluntary certification process (Forest Stewardship
Council -FSC/ Pan European Forest Certification Council - PEFC). The main
participants of this process alongside with the JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp &
Paper Mill" are: the main timber supplier - ICE "Titan", logging
enterprises and the JSC "Arkhbum", the exclusive supplier,
promoting the mill's products on the domestic and world markets.
In 2001 General Director of the JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill"
signed the Sustainable Forestry Declaration and approved to support the
implementation of the sustainable forest management in the logging
enterprises, supplying raw material to the mill.
The top-management of the JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill", JSC
"Arkhbum" and ICE "Titan" signed the Agreement about coordination in the
field of the sustainable forestry. In the frame of the Agreement the
Program for Implementation of the Sustainable Forestry System at the
enterprises of "Titan" group was developed. The special workgroup was
organized to put this idea into practice.
In August, 2003 Sustainable Forestry Strategy and
forest certification on the forest enterprises of the "Titan" group was
approved. In accordance with it, the supply of certified wood raw material
to Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill will achieve 50% by 2020.
Sustainable Forestry
Policy reflects the intention of the JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper
Mill" to achieve maximum compliance with the international standards of the
sustainable forest resources management principles, to exclude purchase of
illegally felled timber, to reveal high conservation value forests and to
perform voluntary certification.
In November, 2003 the preliminary audit of the sustainable forestry
system on its coincidence with FSC principles was performed on the
territory of three logging enterprises, belonging "Titan" group, supplying
timber to the mill (the square of forests rent - 600 thsd. hec.). The
audit was held by the auditors from the Estonian firm NEPCon, the official
representative of Rainforest Alliance Company and SmartWood Program in
Denmark in countries of the Baltic Region and Russia.

The representatives of the mill alongside with the specialists of other
interested sides, among them such environmental organizations as Greenpeace
and WWF, are working hard in the workgroup engaged into development of
criteria and indicators for high conservation value forests of the
Arkhangelsk region.
Our specialists participate in various national and international
seminars and conferences, devoted to the problems of sustainable forest
management.
The JSC "Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill" is the actual member of
the
Association of the Environmentally Responsible Timber Producers of Russia,
created under the aegis of WWF and is one of the founders of the
Arkhangelsk Forest Council.
