APPM intends to implement the innovation project on landfill gas production for the first time in Russia in the Year of Ecology
Arkhangelsk PPM, implementing its strategy of effective use of all available biofuel resources, intends to implement an innovative project on the landfill gas production and its use as fuel for mill’s own needs for the first time in Russia. The beginning of the project implementation was purposely coincided to the Year of Ecology: it is planned to perform the laboratory studies at waste disposal sites. On February 1, 2017 this was announced by Ms. Evgenia Moskalyuk, a chief ecologist of the mill, in the government of the region at the presentation of the Year of Ecology in Pomorie under the chairmanship of Governor Mr.Igor Orlov.
The representative of APPM particularly emphasized in her speech that the ecology for the plant is not only a priority in the development strategy, but it is also a rule of daily work. The strategic investment program for the period until 2021, accepted by the shareholder of APPM - Austrian Pulp Mill Holding GmbH, provides the implementation of projects aimed primarily to minimize the negative impact on the environment, to produce the products which meet all requirements of legislation concerning the environmental protection, to use rationally the natural resources and to ensure the environmental security. Over the past 10 years, the mill's costs for environmental protection activities amounted to more than 7.5 billion rubles.
Ms. Evgenia Moskalyuk also said that the use of the BAT could not be called as a new direction of activity for the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill in terms of the technological process and modernizing production improvement. The list of already implemented activities includes the introduction of the best available (previously - best actual) technologies. Technical re-equipment of the mill is carried out using the best Russian and world practices, modern equipment.
Thus far, the mill has already used technologies that are the part of the technical reference book of 2016 of the best available technologies of TRB No. 1 "Production of pulp, paper, board and wood pulp". In the nearest future, the mill’s plans are to continue using the best available technologies.
"Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill summarized the first results of 2016, - said Ms. Moskalyuk. - With the increase of the productive capacity of the pulp cooking, the results of industrial environmental monitoring, which is carried out by an independent laboratory accredited in accordance with the procedure established by legislation, were the positive dynamics in reducing of emissions to air (minus 13%), pollutants discharge (minus 17% ), waste disposal (77%) in 2016.
According to her, Arkhangelsk PPM has reduced the energy intensity of output: heat - by 23%, electricity - by 11% over the past 12 years. APPM reduced emissions of greenhouse gases by 41% compared with 1990. The mill was the first Russian mill that received a certificate that the greenhouse gas emissions control system meets the requirements of the international standard. Last year, the mill was recognized as the best among Russian mills, which received the highest rating of climate responsibility under the version of CDP (The Carbon Disclosure Project - an international project that disclosures the greenhouse gas emissions data).
Now APPM is implementing the second stage of the priority investment project (PIP) in the area of forest development "Reconstruction of board production". The mill and Valmet Corporation have signed a technical contract on delivery the equipment for the reconstruction of the second board machine. Valmet will be also a supplier of equipment for the construction of a new evaporation plant. This will significantly improve the environmental position of the mill and reduce costs due to the introduction of effective technologies.
The plans of the pulp production re-equipment are included in the development strategy of Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill. Here the focus is on the bleaching of pulp using ECF technology, which will also improve the ecology in the region and ensure a guaranteed export to the ecologically sensitive European market.
The mill successfully implemented a project of installation of a multifuel boiler for the co-incineration of sewage sludge and bark waste (supplier Valmet Power Oy), and installation of decanters on BTP (biological treatment plant), which fully eliminated the transportation of these wastes to the waste disposal facilities of the mill.
As a result of the implementation of the PIP, APPM expects a total ecological effect: a reduction of water consumption by 50%, pollutants emissions by 65%, discharges into the water by 75%, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 18 thousand tonnes of CO2 eq. (1%).
The mill confidently enters into the Year of Ecology, announced by the President of Russia. The mill has developed a concept for its implementation, which includes both global steps – re-equipment of the APPM facilities and operational works - mill's territory improvement; replacement of mercury-containing lamps by LEDs in the mill management building, production offices and facilities and workshops of the mill; purchasing and installation of containers for the collection of waste paper and used battery at the mill and in Novodvinsk; organization of Days of environmental knowledge. Continuation of the implementation of one of mill main projects is participation in the all-Russian environmental social and educational movement "Ecolyata* in Novodvinsk", to which APPM joined two years ago.
* Ecolyata – pupils taking part in different events related to environment.
